Do Braces Hurt? Here's What to Know
Reviewed by drg. Nama Dokter B, Sp.Ort

Fitting braces is generally not painful because it involves no injections or drilling. Discomfort usually starts a few hours afterwards.
Why do teeth feel sore?
Braces apply gentle pressure so teeth move gradually. This pressure can make teeth feel sore or sensitive when chewing, especially 2 to 4 days after fitting or an adjustment.
The brackets can also rub against the lips and inner cheeks until the mouth gets used to them.
How to ease the discomfort
Choose soft foods in the first few days, put orthodontic wax on brackets that rub, and rinse with warm salt water. If needed, ask your dentist about pain relief.
When should you contact your dentist?
Contact your dentist straight away if a wire pokes and cuts your mouth, a bracket comes off, or the pain has not eased after a week.
