Is It Normal for a Tooth to Feel Sensitive After a Filling?

After a filling, some people feel sensitivity when drinking something cold, eating sweets, or biting. In many cases this is normal and settles on its own.

Common causes

The tooth's nerve can be slightly irritated by cleaning out the cavity, especially if it was deep. A filling that sits slightly too high can also make the tooth hurt when you bite.

How long does it last?

Mild sensitivity usually eases within a few days to two weeks. In the meantime, avoid food and drinks that are very cold or hot.

When should you go back to the dentist?

Get it checked if the pain gets worse, throbs, starts without a trigger, or has not improved after two weeks. This may be a sign of nerve inflammation that needs root canal treatment.

If your bite feels high, the dentist can simply adjust the filling in a short visit.
