When Should a Child First See a Dentist?

Many parents wait until their child complains of toothache before visiting a dentist. In fact, early visits help prevent problems from the start.
The recommended age
The first visit is recommended when the first baby tooth appears, or by age 1 at the latest. At this age the dentist checks how the teeth and gums are developing and shows parents how to clean their child's teeth.
What happens at the first visit?
The visit is usually short: a check of the teeth and gums, an assessment of cavity risk, and advice for parents on diet, bottle-feeding habits, and age-appropriate use of fluoride toothpaste.
Tips so your child is not afraid
Talk about the dentist as something fun, avoid scary words, and book the visit for a time when your child is not tired or hungry.
